1. Agni, when kindled, spreads lustre though the firmament, and shines widely in the presence of the dawn: Visvavara, facing the east, glorifying the gods with praises, and bearing the ladle  with the oblation, proceeds (to the sacred fire).

Bearing the ladle with the oblation- Havsa ghrtaci is explained by the Scholiast purodasadilaksanena yuktaya ghrtacya sruca sahita, with the ladle of ghi connected with the cakes and other articles of the oblation: the whole passage is remarkable, whether this explanation be admitted or not, as it leaves no doubt that a female is described as discharging the· offices of a priest worshipping the gods at dawn with hymns and oblations: besides Visvavara being feminine, the epithets praciilana ghrtaci are of the same gender: the term is explained, the repeller of all enemies of the nature of sin, sarvam api paparupam satrum varayitri: we have no further clue to her history than that she is an Atreyi, of the race of Atri.

2.              When about to be kindled, Agni, you rule over ambrosial (water): you are present with the offerer of the oblation for his welfare: he to whom you repair acquires universal wealth; he places before you, Agni the dues of hospitality.

3.Repress, Agni, (our foes to ensure our) exceeding prosperity: may your riches ever be excellent: preserve in concord the relation of man and wife, and overpower the energies of the hostile.

Preserve in concord the relation of man and wife--- Sam jaspatyam suyamam kurusva, make perfect the well-connected duty of wife and husband, an appropriate prayer for a female, Yajurveda, 33.12.

4. I praise the glory, Agni, of you when kindled and blazing fiercely: you are the affluent showerer (of benefits), you are fitly lighted at sacrifices.

5. Agni, who are kindled and invoked, worship the gods at the holy rite, for you are the bearer of the oblation.

6. Offer worship and adoration to Agni when the sacrifice is solemnized: select the bearer of the oblation to the gods.

Select the bearer of the oblation to the Gods- According to the Taittiriya, there are three kinds of sacrificial fire: the havyavahana, which receives the oblation intended for the gods; the kavyavahana, that intended for the Pitara; and the Saharaksas, that intended for the Asuras: the worshipper is therefore directed on this occasion to select the first.
